Nitzsche & Friends: "Among friends" - Battenfeld Spanier & Kühling-Gillot wineries

Two winemakers come together – Carolin Spanier-Gillot and Hans Oliver Spanier. And since then, the two wineries Battenfeld Spanier and Kühling-Gillot have continued their journey together. Together they work the Rhine-Hessian terroirs of Rheinterrasse, Zellertal and Wonnegau. Riesling and Pinot Noir are cultivated on 12 unique crus, mostly limestone and slate soils.

“Authenticity is our compass,” says Carolin Spanier Gillot. “Our philosophy is to bring the precision of the mineral into the glass,” says Hans Oliver Spanier. Head sommelier Stephan Nitzsche confirms the press’s play on words: “For me, the two wineries are diamonds of German Riesling culture.”

Vega Sicilia is Spain’s most legendary winery and the counterpart to the 1ers Grands Crus from Bordeaux. In over 150 years, it has built up an unshakeable reputation. In 1982, the Álvarez family took over the exceptional winery, adhering to an unconditional focus on quality and very clever marketing.

For head sommelier Stephan Nitzsche, Vega Sicilia stands for prestige. The wines are exported all over the world to a total of 149 countries and sold to around 4,500 customers – after prior allocation of a personal quota. From European royalty to Winston Churchill, the list of prominent admirers is long.

The flagship of the house is the top wine Único – translated as “unique”. Robert Parker commented in 1988: “Impressive. This wine should occupy a place in history alongside the greatest Bordeaux of the sixties.”
